      Solenoid Valve Working Principle And Function

      Solenoid valve is a device that controls the flow of fluid by electromagnetic force. Solenoid valve consists of electromagnetic coil, iron core, iron core winding, valve spool, valve seat, valve stem, etc. By controlling the current of the electromagnetic coil to control the switch of the valve, so as to regulate the flow of fluid. Solenoid valves can be used to control the flow of gases, liquids, steam and other fluids.

      Solenoid valves are divided into three main categories from the principle:

      Pilot operated solenoid valves

      When energized, a pilot operated solenoid valve will allow electromagnetic force to open the pilot orifice, causing a sharp drop in pressure in the upper chamber. This creates a differential pressure around the closing member that is low on the top and high on the bottom, which causes the fluid pressure to push the closing member upward, eventually opening the valve. When power is lost, spring force closes the pilot orifice, causing inlet pressure to rapidly enter the chamber through the bypass orifice. This creates a lower and higher differential pressure around the shutoff member, causing the fluid pressure to push the shutoff member downward, ultimately closing the valve.

      Direct acting solenoid valves

      In a direct-acting solenoid valve, when power is applied, the solenoid coil generates an electromagnetic force that lifts the shutoff member off the valve seat, opening the valve. Once the power is cut off, the electromagnetic force disappears and the spring presses the closing member against the valve seat, closing the valve. The distinguishing feature of direct-acting solenoid valves is their ability to operate properly under vacuum, negative pressure or zero pressure.

      Step-by-step direct acting solenoid valves

      Step-by-step direct-acting solenoid valves combine the principles of direct-acting and pilot-operated operation. When there is no pressure difference between the inlet and outlet, when energized, the electromagnetic force will directly lift the pilot valve and the main valve’s closing member, gradually opening the valve. And when the inlet and outlet reach the starting pressure difference, after energizing, the electromagnetic force will act on the pilot small valve firstly, causing the pressure of the lower chamber of the main valve to rise and the pressure of the upper chamber to fall, and using the pressure difference to push open the main valve. When the power is off, the pilot valve will use the spring force or medium pressure to push the closing member downward, to achieve valve closure. Step-by-step direct-acting solenoid valves are characterized by the fact that they can work properly even under zero differential pressure, vacuum or high pressure, but they require greater power and must be installed horizontally.

      Solenoid valves application

      • Hydraulic control systems: Solenoid valves are often used in hydraulic control systems and can be used to control a variety of hydraulic systems, such as excavators, cranes and industrial robots, by controlling the flow of liquid.
      • Pneumatic control systems: In addition to hydraulic systems, solenoid valves are also widely used in pneumatic control systems. For example, solenoid valves can control the movement of pneumatic cylinders to realize the control of mechanical equipment.
      • Flow control: In many fluid control systems, solenoid valves are also used to control flow. For example, in the beverage filling production line, the solenoid valve can control the flow of liquid in the filling machine.
